Statement of “50 Mythical Worlds inspired by 50 Women Composers”

I am a Chinese-American artist, musician, and teacher based in San Francisco. Growing up as a classically-trained pianist, I noticed the lack of female representation in my repertoire as well as the absence of written and verbal discussion around composers identifying as women, particularly women of color. After becoming a teacher at an all-girls school, I decided to make a difference in my own music education as well as that of my students by raising awareness about herstorical and contemporary women in music.

I am wholeheartedly committed to educating the world about women composers, their lives, and their masterpieces using my artistry. This purpose spurred me to pursue the theme of “50 Mythical Worlds inspired by 50 Women Composers” for the 12th Annual Sanchez Art Center 50/50 Show.

“50 Mythical Worlds inspired by 50 Women Composers” features a series of oil paintings depicting fantastical landscapes, visual manifestations of the music composed by contemporary women composers of various ethnic and cultural backgrounds (with a primary focus on women composers of color).

I compiled lists of potential composers before selecting fifty to inspire my paintings. The fifty composers and their music were extensively researched, after which I selected the final compositions and wrote thoughtful reflections while listening to the pieces (visit the 50/50 Show Blog to learn more). The composer, her music, and my reflection served as powerful fuel for the creation of each oil painting. In addition to detail brushes, I used palette knives and color shapers to “add” and “subtract” layers of paint, creating lyrical scenes that encourage viewers to let their imaginations run wild.

The educational component of my process is a significant highlight of this series. The completion of each painting was followed by a thorough post shared via my web and social media platforms educating the public about the composer, her masterpiece, and why/how she inspired me. It is vital that we honor, encourage, and advocate for women composers who are living and creating today. In doing so, we ensure that the next generation of girls and women will pursue their creative dreams while having many role models to look up to and be inspired by.

Know that a portion of the proceeds from this series will go to an organization supporting diverse women composers and their careers. By purchasing a painting from this collection, you will bolster the success of women in music presently and well into the future.
