ANGELA HAN is a Chinese-American multidisciplinary creator (artist, musician, educator, storyteller, curator) who builds speculative worlds where women are eternally respected, celebrated, and cherished. In a process she calls “mythmaking,” Han weaves together research on various disciplines, including music, folklore, and herstory, with reflections of her own lived experiences to create new narratives that embody her hopes for the future. These stories are brought to life through intricate, multilayered paintings featuring rich, lyrical compositions.

Her artwork has been exhibited at Arc Studios & Gallery, International Hotel Manilatown Center, Sanchez Art Center, SOMArts, and Voss Gallery. Han is the recipient of the San Francisco Arts Commission Artists Grant (2021) and California Arts Council Individual Artists Fellowship (2023). She currently serves as President of the Board of Directors at the Asian American Women Artists Association (AAWAA).

Influenced by music, folklore, and herstory, I weave together insights gained from researching and engaging in these disciplines with my own lived experiences to create paintings steeped in profound stories. These stories often explore what it means to live with courage, persevere against all odds, and strive towards achieving the impossible. As a “mythmaker,” I combine legendary, herstorical, and personal narratives to create new stories that shape society into one that celebrates my identity as a Chinese-American woman.

In addition to illustrating these stories, my paintings bring to life speculative worlds that marinate in my imagination, simmering in symbolism and nuance. I like to call these worlds “Paradises” – empowering spaces created for women to grow and thrive, where we can fulfill our greatest dreams and indulge in our deepest desires. Vibrant color palettes, lyrical movements, and a knack for intricate designs inspired by my love of illuminated manuscripts are characteristic of the Paradises I paint.

Through a fusion of research, “mythmaking,” storytelling, and painting, my current creative practice focuses on building worlds that respond to the following questions: “What does a true home, a fulfilled sense of belonging look like for Asian women? What elements are necessary to cultivate this Paradise so that Asian women believe they can reach above the stars, overcome the impossible, and push beyond societal expectations? How do we build a home where Asian women are honored as powerful forces of change and transformation?
