My 山水 Shan Shui (Mountains & Rivers) series is inspired by a dance called, “The Painting Journey: The Legend of a Panorama of Mountains and River” and the book, 山海经 Shan Hai Jing (The Classic of Mountains and Seas).
Amidst the turbulence of the COVID19 pandemic and the increase in anti-Asian hate that came with it, I wanted to create a space where I could feel safe, respected, and celebrated as a Chinese-American woman. This led me to paint my interpretations of “paradise,” influenced by landscapes from the 山海经 Shan Hai Jing where hybrid identities are considered powerful.
