Day 14: Nkeiru Okoye - Harriet Tubman

Day 14 of 50: Today, I am inspired by Nkeiru Okoye, Black composer, and her “Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed that Line to Freedom” opera.

Listening to and watching “Harriet Tubman,” I’m immediately struck by the song, “I am Harriet Tubman.” The words reverberate beyond the stage and the resonance, the conviction of “I am a free woman” (© Nkeiru Okoye) penetrates my heart and soul to meet Dignity. Sung by Janinah Burnet, the song soars with strength - an unbreakable will, blazing through injustice to fueling change.
